DCU Top Trier Hall of Fame
The DCU Top Trier award is a yearly award handed out to the player who showed the most desire, but failed, to score a single goal*.
*The basic rule is those who don’t score are eligible but there are various twists to the award that ensure that the most deserving gets the award every year i.e. Who it annoys the most.
Here are the previous winners of the Top Trier award:
2010/2011: Anthony Moyles
Anthony was a clear and deserving winner of the award for this season. Despite claiming he should be out of the running due to some “chronic” lung problem, he still managed to rack up close to 10 appearances, all of which were in a midfield/forward role.
Anthony wasn’t the only nominee for the award in this season as Barry O’Shea and Brian Kelly had racked up more appearances but luckily for them, it bothered Anto more.
2010/2011 season (Special Award): Will Egan
Anto wasn’t the only player to bring home a prize this season as Will’s efforts were so extraordinary that the club felt duty-bound to reward/mock them. Will was an ever present in the side during the season and while his play was of “player of the year” caliber, his goal scoring was not. The sheer ineptitude of his efforts had to be rewarded but not with the full 100% top trier as it was clear he couldnt have been trying. And so, the 50% trier award was born with Will being it’s first recipient.
2008/2009 season: Andy Hyland
The 2009/2010 season was a tough one for DCU as we narrowly missed out on promotion from the Major 1 league. In the end it was 1 game that separated us from a promotion. Had we won the final game of the season we’d have got promoted. Andy had the unfortunate luck of being the one to miss a penalty in the dying minutes which would have won the game. A lot of “could” and “would” in there but you get the point!
What a hard-luck seaon Andy had in front of goal that year. Along with the penalty there was also the yellow card for diving while already 1 on 1 with the keeper. The ball was never going in the net for Andy not matter how hard he tried and he try he did. He truly was the top trier.
2007/2008 season: Damo Pollard
This was a terribly enjoyable award to hand out. Not only did Damo actually score this season but the award annoyed him no end (the best part!).
As stipulated in the rules above, the basic rule of not scoring a goal is not always the case. During this season Damo scored a goal for the Saturday team but despite all his protests, and there were a LOT, Saturday goals do not count and as Damo played a full season of games for the Sunday team (and a good chunk of them in midfield!) he was the clear and deserving winner of the award for this season. Damo has gone on to score several goals each of the following seasons (annoyingly) making it difficult to give him this award again. But we are always ready!
